The university has developed a multi-phase project to enhance the Intellectual Commons and outdoor space along University Drive. The primary goal of this project is to improve pedestrian safety. Secondary objectives are to develop the gateway and visual branding opportunity, student collaboration, as well as aesthetics through the use of landscape, site furnishing, signage and other donor recognition opportunities.

Phase one of this project, which is currently underway, includes:

  • Widening the sidewalks from M.E. Sadler Hall to Sid W. Richardson Building to enhance student safety and movement.
  • Leveling the ground’s slope to improve student use and enjoyment of the area.
  • Enhancing the visibility of the Brothers Statue by moving it a few feet closer to University Drive and creating a dedicated student space around it.

Contractors are installing burlap wraps around the trunks of trees, as well as orange safety netting around the construction area. Safety is always a top priority, and signage is in place to direct pedestrians to temporary sidewalks and around the construction areas.

Site work will begin June 10, and the first phase of the project is expected to be complete before the fall semester begins.
